1a. What activity did you choose for this discussion?
Citizen 3a.: Create experiences for learners to make positive, socially responsible contributions and exhibit empathetic behavior online that build relationships and community.
1a. Why did you select this activity? (copy and paste activity from the Padlet into your Response) I selected this activity because we are currently covering biotic and abiotic factors that affect ocean systems, such as coral reefs, and historically, once students understand that some of the changes needed involve government action or public awareness, they want to get involved. Adding this component would help tie them to our community and provide them with the skills and tools needed to learn to affect change.
2. Briefly explain how your chosen activities meet the four criteria:
Relates to your setting/context I am a biology teacher and we live in Florida where climate change and human activities are changing the survival of coral reefs. Students have the ability to visit reefs in our area and can actively affect change by becoming informed.
Promotes a positive vision of digital citizenship Once students are informed on what human activities negatively affect reefs, they are able to share this information with others who do not live in this area. They can learn how to properly share information online and deal with statements and comments they do not agree with.
Relates to one of the ISTE Standard for Educator indicators This directly relates to the following standards for Educators: 2.3 Citizen Educators inspire students to positively contribute to and responsibly participate in the digital world. 2.5 Designer Educators design authentic, learner-driven activities and environments that recognize and accommodate learner variability.
Helps students develop as digital self, digital interactor, or digital agent Students will learn the following: 2.3.a Create Positive Experiences Create experiences for learners to make positive, socially responsible contributions and exhibit empathetic behavior online that build relationships and community. 2.5.b Design Authentic Learning Activities Design authentic learning activities that align with content area standards and use digital tools and resources to maximize active, deep learning.
3. What are you hoping to learn through this activity? Or, what result would you hope to achieve if delivering this lesson in your class?
Through this lesson, I want to teach my students that knowing about a problem, especially an environmental one, is insufficient. I want them to learn to check the validity of courses by having the basic knowledge to understand worldwide issues with our oceans, human activity, and government responsibilities. I want them to move away from "Why doesn't the government fix it?" into "What can we, as the community, do to help preserve or restore our resources?". I want them to realize that we may not have the answers, but we can develop solutions together.
